In the olden times if someone was suffering from hair loss or baldness he or she had to live with it, today that is not the case anymore. Thanks to advancements in medical science and cosmetic surgery, the wondrous Hair Transplant surgery is an available option that many have benefited from.

A hair transplant is a procedure in which hair is taken from the donor region at the back of the scalp where there is permanent hair and implanted into the balding regions of the head. This enables hair to grow naturally and normally in the balding regions thereby giving the head a fuller appearance. It is similar to planting “seeds” taken from one fertile orchid to another barren one.

Types of Procedures:

There are two hair transplant techniques, the Strip removal method, the FUT, and the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Conventionally, the FUT method was used in which a strip of hair is removed from the donor region using a scalpel and then broken down into individual hair grafts to be implanted into the balding areas. This method is still performed today but it is invasive and causes more bleeding and a visible linear scar on the head, and is thus not a good option for those who wear short hairstyles.

The FUE is the state of the art technique of performing a hair transplant. In this technique an instrument is used to make a very small circular incision around the hair follicle to remove it. Once enough hair follicles have been removed – they are implanted into the balding regions using a very small punching instrument. This method is minimally invasive, causes little bleeding and there is no visible scarring on the head. Besides, it also causes minimum risk of infection and recovery period is also short. The patient can resume daily activities on the second or third day following the surgery.

Both FUE and FUT produce equally successful results but people usually prefer strip removal method over the former. The FUE technique requires more labor, and higher skills of the cosmetic surgeon to perform it therefore it is more expensive. However, the extra money paid for FUE is worth it.

Much advancement is being seen in hair transplant techniques such as the Stem Cell FUE that uses a mechanical device to extract grafts speedily. But it is very important to consult a certified and qualified cosmetic surgeon to decide which procedure will be better for you.
