Having a hair transplant is a very exciting experience as you are on a journey from being bald to getting a full set of hair. In the vast majority of patients, the grafted hairs will shed during the first few weeks leaving behind the transplanted hair follicles. These transplanted follicles will take root and begin growing hair 3 to 4 months or later after the surgery.
Do All Patients Shed Hair Post Hair Transplant?
Hair shedding after hair transplant surgery, technically known as shock loss, is quite common. Majority of the patients shed transplanted hair as well as some of the existing healthy hair on the scalp after the surgery. But this is not always the case as a small percentage of patients retain the transplanted hairs and they continue to grow without the transplanted follicles going through the three to four month waiting period. Such patients start growing hairs from the transplanted follicles the next month following the surgery.
Is It Normal Not To Experience Shock Loss?
It is perfectly normal if your hair does not shed in the given time period after a hair transplant. You just need to be patient and wait for some time to see it grow. But even if your hair does not fall off, remember hair regrowth is not an overnight process. You have to wait for several weeks to see any growth out of the planted grafts. It is hard to wait for hair to grow, as it is something you highly anticipate. But this wait is worth it as you will get permanent hair that will not shed even under the influence of Dihydrotestosterone. Initially it will begin to grow out thin but as it grows, it will continue to thicken.
When Will I See Final Result?
You would see the true results of your hair transplant after a year. The typical period of transplanted hair shedding is between two to four weeks after a hair transplant. The initial postoperative hair shedding is what patients want to avoid but because of shock loss or scalp trauma the follicles are forced into extended resting for three to five months on average.
While most people experience hair shedding after a transplant some do not. This should be seen as a positive as you get to have your cake, and eat it too. It would have no impact on your ultimate results. Some hair may continue to grow while others will remain intact but not grow. The ones that are intact and are not growing have most likely broken off the hair follicle underneath the surface of the scalp and will fall out eventually or be pushed out when the transplanted hair starts growing.
If you still have any queries and concerns regarding hair transplant surgery and hair regrowth after the procedure, it is advised that you consult a trichologist or some experienced hair transplant surgeon.
