How to calculate the Number of Grafts Required?

Hair Transplant Grafts

Hair loss is a natural phenomenon that damages a person’s personality more often than not. It takes away the charm and the charisma along with the independence of maintaining a hairstyle of choice. Hair transplants thankfully have changed all that in the last few decades. One can regain the lost charm and youthfulness with the help of a hair transplant procedure.

The first and perhaps the most important question to ask is that how many grafts are required. There are ways in which this calculation is done but it is important to understand that factors that directly effect this calculation.

Amount of Hair Lost

The first and foremost factor in determining the number of grafts is the amount of hair that is lost. The greater the loss, the more grafts will be needed. Only an expert hair transplant surgeon can determine the actual number of grafts that are required to cover the lost hair.

Desired Density

The density desired by the person getting the hair transplant is also very important. The amount of thickness can vary from light to extremely thick. Lighter hair will obviously need lesser grafts and vice versa.

Type of Hair

The type of hair also plays a part in the determination of the number of grafts that will be required. Curly hair give a fuller appearance in comparison with straighter hair. Similarly, lighter colored hair have little contrast with the scalp and fewer hair are need to achieve thickness in comparison with darker colored hair.

Donor Site

The amount of grafts that can be taken from the donor site is yet another critical factor in this scenario. Normally the donor sites can offer enough hair for most transplants. However, if the hair loss is extensive and large bald areas are to be covered, the donor site may not be able to offer enough hair.  Also if the donor site has thinning as well, the number of grafts available will take a hit.

Surgeon’s Assessment

At the end of the day, all factors are to be considered by the surgeon who is well aware of all the important factors. With practical experience, the surgeon will be able to determine how to achieve the desired effect and how many grafts will be needed for this purpose.
