Hair Transplant Surgery for Alopecia Areata Patients

Hair Transplant Surgery for Alopecia Areata Patients

There are a number of skin conditions that a person may come across during a life time. Some of them affect us temporarily while others may stay for longer periods. The effects of each can vary depending on their severity and nature. More often than not, these conditions can be treated. Hair loss is generally associated with Androgenic Alopecia. It is for sure the most common reason for hair loss. However, it is not the only reason. The second most common reason causing hair loss is Alopecia Areata.

Alopecia Areata: It is a condition in which hair from certain areas of the head are lost altogether. Generally round or oval spots are made though it can take any shape. It is more common in children and may be temporary or permanent. In some cases, it can go away on its own. Generally it affects the scalp and beard hair but it can affect other parts of the body as well. It may only affect a small area or spread out to a large part of the area under its effect. Research on this phenomenon is ongoing and there is strong evidence indicating that it may be of hereditary nature. There appears to be a relationship between alopecia areata and autoimmune diseases as well.

Hair Transplant Treatment: The most common treatment for the condition is the use of steroids. These are generally injected at the site where the problem exists. Steroids may also be used in form of a cream which is applied to the affected area. Occasionally doctors may use Minoxidil to treat this condition as well. There are a number of other creams that are used individually and sometimes in combinations to treat this condition.

Hair transplant for Alopecia Areata: Although hair transplant for this condition can be done, it does not bring much fruit. The reason is that the skin in the area is affected badly enough that it does not provide the support needed for the transplanted hair. In rare cases, success has been reported though. It is considered as a better idea to cover the area with existing hair or in case of the effects of this condition being extensive, a wig may be used.
