Losing hair is not an easy experience to get through. But the worst part of it is when someone tells you some make-believe hair loss myths, and as a result makes your hair loss solutions worthless.
There is quite a lot deception being hawked out there about the reasons for hair loss among women and how one can recover from it or avoid it altogether.
I have compiled a number of the so-called myths and half-truths, as well as the corresponding truths and facts, to help you with your hair-loss recovery journey.
Myth: Hair loss is not common among women.
Fact: Women, just like men, suffer hair loss as well. Actually studies estimate that a third of all women suffer some form of hair loss at some point in their lives.
Myth: Everyday stress factors cause hair to fall off your scalp.
Fact: The only stressthat can lead to hair loss is physiologic stress. This includes trichotillomania; which is a hair-pulling disorder, childbirth, physical trauma, general anesthesia etc. Enduring everyday stress will not make you lose your mane.
Myth: Hair styles do not cause one to lose hair.
Fact: Hair styles that put too much pressure on your scalp like cornrows, weaves, braids, tightly wound rollers etc. cause traction alopecia; which is a form of hair loss among women.
Myth: You inherit loss of hair from your mother.
Fact: Going bald is hereditary but is does not necessarily come from your mother’s side. It can come from either parent although it is more likely for a man whose father is bald to develop male-pattern baldness as well.
Myth: Wearing hats causes hair to fall off because of the strain it puts on the follicles.
Fact: The truth of the matter is that there is no research to support this claim. So it is ok to go ahead and protect your forehead from the summer heat.
Myth: Cold water stops hair loss right on its tracks.
Fact: Using cold water to wash your locks every morning might increase blood circulation; not only on your head, but your entire body as well. The only downside is that it will not cure your hair loss or do anything to it whatsoever.
Myth: Frequent washing of hair (shampooing and all) will cause your hair to thin out and fall off.
Fact: Au contraire, shampooing and conditioning your hair will keep your mane and scalp clean and free of any oil residue and dust.
Myth: Extended exposure to the sun will cause your locks to fall off.
Fact: If this was the case, everyone in Dubai would be hairless. Fact: Although this is one of the myths I grew up with, it is not true. Regardless how often or short you cut your mane; it will not cure hair loss if the cause is not identified. The only reason your hair feels fuller and stronger after the big chop is because it is lighter at the ends and thicker towards the scalp.
