Stress & Hair Loss: Are they Related?

Excessive Stress Can Cause Hair Loss

Emotional or physical stress is one of the most common causes of hair loss. Studies have shown that those who live in a constant state of fear and anxiety or those who have undergone a serious physical or emotional trauma are more prone to hair fall as compared to those living a happy, satisfied life. Stress and hair loss bear a complex relationship, which the researchers have failed to explain so far, but one thing is for sure that excessive stress can cause your hair follicles to shrink, ultimately causing the hair to fall out.

Different types of hair loss caused by stress:

Hair Loss caused by stress and anxiety is broadly divided into three types:

  • Telogen effluviumThis refers to a condition in which excessive stress forces a large number of hair follicles to go into dormant phase. In the next few months, when the hair growth cycle is complete, these hairs suddenly start falling out without any apparent reason.
  • Trichotillomania This refers to a condition in which anxiety and stress intrigues and irresistible urge to pull out hair on the, body, especially scalp. Pulling your hair constantly weakens the roots causing the hair to ultimately fall out.
  • Alopecia areata It is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system starts attacking the hair follicles all over the body, causing hair loss. There are a variety of factors that are supposed to contribute to alopecia areata and excessive stress and anxiety is one of them.

However, the best thing about stress related hair loss is that it does not have to be permanent. Hair generally starts growing back as soon as the sufferer gets the sources of stress under control.

It is pertinent to mention here that hair loss caused by excessive stress is never immediate. The sufferer generally begins to lose hair several months after the stressful event has occurred. This is simply due to the length of your hair growth cycle. Hair loss cause by excessive stress always begins once the growth cycle of existing hairs is complete and continues for several months afterwards.

If you suddenly start notice significant hair loss when brushing or washing your hair, and have not gone through a physical or emotional trauma over the last 6 to 12 months, discuss with your physician immediately. Sudden hair loss generally signals an underlying medical condition.
