Can Stress Cause Hair Loss after a Hair Transplant?

Although many refuse to believe, hair transplants are a permanent fix. Hair that are transplanted do not fall away like normal hair. Why do Transplanted Hair not Fall?

The reason behind this is pretty simple. The biggest cause of hair loss is known as androgenic alopecia. Also known as male pattern baldness, it affects more than two third of men and almost half of women around the world at some stage in life. The root cause of androgenic alopecia is known as Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is a male hormone that causes hair loss.

The transplanted hair are taken from specific areas in the scalp. The hair in these regions (back and side of the head) are resistant to DHT and therefore once they are transplanted, they are not affected by it in their new site as well.

Are There Exceptions to This?

The transplanted hair should not fall at all. But like most things in life, there are some exceptions to this rule. One of the causes of hair fall after the transplant is that the hair taken for transplant were taken from the wrong areas. For example, hair taken from too high in the back of the head may eventually get affected by the DHT.

Another reason can be that these hair are normal hair shedding away. Transplanted hair do not shed once they grow but do not stop hair around them from the problem. Telogen Effluvium too can cause hair loss.

Hair Loss due to Stress After a Transplant

Hair loss can take place due to stress, both physical and mental. Telogen Effluvium is a condition in which a greater amount of hair go into the resting phase than normal and hair thinning takes place. Most often, this is not very noticeable but in severe cases, significant thinning may take place. It is generally caused by poor diet, trauma such as a severe physical injury, birth of a child or a major surgery. It is just a temporary problem and once the body recovers from the shock, the hair reverts back to the original condition. In case of a person going through such hair loss, seeing a dermatologist is a good idea.
