The Facts about Shock Loss Following Hair Restoration Surgery

The Facts about Shock Loss Following Hair Restoration Surgery

Some people who undergo a hair transplant procedure may experience “shock loss” following their hair transplant surgery. Shock loss is a response to the trauma that occurs during or after a surgical procedure. It is not a very common side-effect of a hair transplant, but it still happens to some individuals. For some people, shock loss after a surgical hair restoration is temporary, but in other cases, where precautions are not taken into consideration, it can be a permanent condition.

The best way to avoid the permanent shock loss following a hair transplant surgery is doing your proper research before opting for a hair restoration procedure. Always go for the pre-procedure consultation with your doctor and know about all the options and their possible outcomes. An experienced hair transplant surgeon would be able to determine your candidacy to undergo a hair transplant procedure.

How does it occur?

When you undergo a surgical hair restoration procedure, the typical transplantation of hair follicles from a donor to the recipient area involves a lot of disruptions that can cause trauma. In response to performing this invasive procedure, some of the native hair may not resist and hair loss occurs, known as shock loss in hair transplantation’s term. This is perfectly normal and hairs grow back after few weeks unless it is not a permanent shock loss.

Difference between temporary and permanent Shock loss

Most of the hair experts divide the shock loss phenomenon into two types, temporary and permanent.

Temporary shock loss

The temporary shock loss occurs in response to the trauma, which can be introduced by many different factors. The prominent feature of this condition is that the hair regrows after a certain period.

During the hair transplantation procedure, when a surgeon makes incisions near the areas that contain too many thin hairs, due to stress during the procedure, the native hairs fall out. This is temporary and the lost hairs regrow after some time.

In a FUT hair transplantation procedure, a strip of scalp is removed from the donor part to obtain a bulk of hair follicles and to prepare hair grafts for transplantation. After the hair grafts are obtained, the surgeon must close the wounds carefully to avoid any disruption. But in the case, the wounds do not heal properly, the blood flow from these wounds can traumatize the hair in the vicinity of the wounds, leading to shock loss. This also a temporary shock loss and the hair regrow as the wounds get healed.

Permanent Shock loss

Permanent shock loss occurs in response to the trauma that does not allow the hair to regrow. In most cases, these hairs are already affected with a hair loss condition such as hormonal imbalance or hereditary hair loss, which are responsible for causing permanent hair loss. Moreover, the permanent shock loss can also occur due to the follicular damage during a hair transplantation procedure.

Is the shock loss preventable?

There is no remedy that completely prevents shock loss during or after a hair transplant, but there are some precautionary measures that most hair experts suggest in order to tackle the shock loss.

Therapies

Some hair transplant surgeons may perform non-invasive therapies such as PRP therapy and laser hair therapy to enhance the growth of native hair in order to prevent shock loss. These are very effective, however, there is no guarantee that these therapies will completely prevent the shock loss following a hair transplant procedure.

Choosing the right technique for hair transplantation

Choosing a method for hair transplantation is one of the most critical decisions while planning to undergo a hair transplant procedure. In this modern world, there exist some advanced techniques for surgical hair restoration that are minimally invasive and cause no shock loss. Stem cell FUE hair transplant in Dubai is the best among them. Because in this procedure, when hair follicles are extracted, some part of the follicles and stem cells are left behind for the regrowth of hair, this makes it less invasive and less damaging procedure as compared to some other hair transplantation techniques.
