Post Hair Transplant Shampoo Recommendation

shampoo after hair transplant

For many, hair transplant surgery is a life-changing procedure that not only changes their physical appearance but their self-esteem as well. It is a huge investment that you make to reap the benefits for the rest of your life. But simple negligence can ruin the outcome of your hair transplant. You are allowed to shampoo your scalp by a third of the surgery and after that, you are asked to wash your head regularly to allow the scab to come off naturally. But the shampoo you choose to wash your head after hair transplant plays a key role in determining the ultimate outcome of the surgery.

Carefully read the ingredients listed on the shampoo bottle and make sure you don’t select the one containing chemicals injurious for your freshly transplanted hair. Listed below are some ingredients that you need to avoid post-transplant.

  • Sulfates

Most of the low-quality shampoos contain sulfates such as Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and Ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS). These organic compounds are added to the shampoos because they help produce more foam. But if present in concentrations of over two percent, these sulfates can irritate the scalp and damage even healthy hair follicles. So you can very well imagine the effect of ALS and SLS on your scalp post-transplant.

  • Sodium Chloride

Sodium chloride, the common salt that you use to season your dishes, is also used in the manufacturing of shampoos and conditioners as a thickener. But it can also cause itchy and dry scalp, and in a worst-case scenario, may trigger hair loss as well. Freshly transplanted hair follicles may not be able to withstand the harshness of sodium chloride and may fall off.

  • Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a preservative that is often used in shampoos to increase their shelf life. It is also known for its disinfectant qualities and this is why it is usually used in baby shampoos. This apparently beneficial chemical can actually damage the DNA of hair tissues. It can also cause hair loss and thus, shampoos containing formaldehyde should be avoided for at least 4 weeks following a hair transplant surgery.

  • Alcohol

Almost all hair care products contain some percentage of alcohol and therefore it seems to be nearly impossible to avoid alcohol completely. But you can avoid at least its higher concentrations. Look your shampoo for alcohol content and buy one containing the least proportion of alcohol. Higher concentrations of alcohol dehydrate and damage hair, leading to hair loss, especially when used after a hair transplant.

  • Greaser

Greasers are also a key ingredient of most of the hair care products. Petroleum, mineral oil, and lanolin are all greasers added to hair care products for artificial wetness and shine. But these greasers prevent the absorption of natural oils by the scalp as well as hair shafts, ultimately damaging your hair texture.
