No Shedding after Hair Transplant: Will This Affect Hair Growth?

Hair loss treatment in Dubai

Having a hair transplant is an exciting experience as it allows patients to revive the days of their crown glory. They say goodbye to their balding days by gaining a full set of hair. Although the procedure gives exceptional results, it takes time to yield those results. Before achieving the final effects of a hair transplant in Dubai, patients have to go through a shedding phase. Most patients shed the grafted hairs during the first few weeks after a transplant. However, every patient does not experience hair shedding or shock loss the same way. Some patients do not go through this phase at all and retain the transplanted hair. But the question is: does this affect the hair transplant results?

Below we have discussed everything related to hair shedding after a transplant. So, continue reading to learn more about it so you can make a well-informed decision.

Shedding of Non-Transplanted Hair

The human hair continuously goes through a hair growth and shedding cycle. This cycle consists of three phases:

  1. Anagen
  2. Catagen
  3. Telogen

The Anagen phase, otherwise known as the active phase, lasts for about 2-6 years. During this phase, the hair continues to grow about 1cm after every 28 days.

The Catagen phase is also known as the transitional phase, and it lasts for about 2-3 weeks. About 3% of all our hairs are in the Catagen phase at any given time.

Lastly, the Telogen phase, otherwise known as the resting phase, is responsible for the maximum hair shedding. This phase lasts for about 100 days, and almost 6-8% of the total hair can be in this phase.

Due to this cycle, human beings shed 50-100 hair every day. So, hair shedding is a normal body function. It should not raise any concern for as long as we lose the standard number of hairs.

Shedding after a Hair Transplant

Shedding is a normal phenomenon for our hair. While we lose hair every day, hair loss becomes excessive after a hair transplant. However, this period is known as effluvium or shock loss. In this period, patients experience hair loss due to their scalp trauma during the surgery. This type of hair shedding is also expected because it is the body’s response towards trauma.

Generally, shedding after a hair transplant occurs between 1-5 weeks. Although shock loss is inevitable, it is also temporary. These transplanted follicles will eventually take root and begin growing after 3 to 4 months of the surgery. Therefore, patients should not be alarmed as shock loss does not permanently damage their hairs.

Why does hair shed after surgery?

After a hair transplant in Dubai, the hair can go into the resting phase or the Telogen phase. It is mainly due to the trauma that the scalp experiences during the transplant. The scalp goes through severe trauma when:

  • the hair follicles are extracted from the scalp, and their blood supply is disconnected
  • incisions and cuts are made in the scalp for implanting the hair grafts
  • the hair follicles are implanted into the scalp

These events affect not only the treatment site but also the surrounding areas.

Do all patients shed hair after hair transplants?

Hair shedding after hair transplant surgery is a common phenomenon. The majority of the patients shed transplanted hair as well as some of the existing healthy hair after the surgery. But this is not always the case.

Some patients, although a small percentage, retain the transplanted hairs. Their transplanted hair follicles continue growing without going through a three-to-four-month waiting period. They generally experience hair regrowth from the transplanted follicles the month following the surgery.

Is it normal not to experience shock loss?

Most people experience hair shedding after a hair transplant. However, not all people do. So, it is perfectly normal if someone’s hair does not shed in the given period after a hair transplant. They need to be patient and wait for some time to see the hair growth.

But even if the hair does not fall off, patients must remember that hair regrowth is not an overnight process. So, they should wait for a few weeks to see any growth out of the transplanted grafts. Initially, the hair begins to grow thin, but it continues to thicken as it grows.

Although waiting for something highly anticipated can be hard, the wait after a transplant is usually worthwhile. Patients get permanent hairs that do not shed even under the influence of Dihydrotestosterone.

When will I see the final results?

Generally, the final results of a hair transplant become noticeable after a year. During this time, typically, the hair shedding lasts for about two to four weeks after the hair transplant. Most patients want to avoid the initial postoperative hair shedding. However, due to shock loss or scalp trauma, the follicles are forced into extended resting for three to five months on average.

While most people experience hair shedding after a hair transplant in Dubai, some do not. However, it generally does not impact the ultimate results of the transplant. It means some hair may continue to grow while others will remain intact but not grow. The ones that are intact but not growing have most likely broken off the hair follicle underneath the scalp’s surface. They will eventually fall out or be pushed out when the transplanted hair starts growing.
