How to Deal with Winter Hair

Don’t let the hair products fool you! Dry hair is not a hair type, it is a condition that is very much treatable. There are numerous factors that can trigger dry hair problem, from excessive shampooing to frequent use of blow dryers to lack of humidity in the air. But one factor that affects all and one is winter season. As soon as the temperatures begin to drop, your strands begin to fly. Do you know why? This is because of the static caused by dry air and woolen clothes. But this time around, don’t let winter ruin your hair. Follow the below mentioned hair care tips and keep your hair at its best throughout the season.

  1. Hats and scarves:

The basic tip to keep your hair thick and healthy is to protect it from austerity of weather, be it direct sunlight or scorching heat or chilled air. Exposing your hair to sun, wind or snow will dry out your locks, stripping moisture from your luscious locks. Wear silk scarves followed by cozy woolen caps to protect your hair from harshness of weather. Silk scarves will help you avoid hat head.

  1. Shea Butter:

Cold air and dry heat take the moisture off your locks, drying them out. To counter the drying effect of weather you need to follow a more robust hair care regimen. Wearing hats and scarves or minimizing your number of head washes is not enough to prevent your locks becoming dry and frizzy. Moisturize them externally, and what can be a better option than the every-yummy Shea Butter. Apply Shea Butter to your locks 2 to 3 times a week to lock in the natural moisture.

  1. Bounce softener for Bouncy strands:

Static is the biggest winter woe for people across the globe. In order to avoid your hair from looking charged after you remove your cap, simply keep a few bounce fabric softener sheets in your bag. Whenever you feel static effect, gently press these sheets against your hair to eliminate static instantly and keep your tresses smooth.

  1. Keep cool:

Hot water soaks are relaxing without any doubt. But it dehydrates your skin and hair. So, if you wish to prevent your hair from becoming dry and damaged during winters, use moderately warm water to shower and your locks will be grateful.

  1. Invest in a humidifier:

Staying in a heated apartment or office all day long is just like exposing your tresses to blow dryer all day. To avoid over-drying of hairs, invest in a humidifier to add moisture to the room. This will not only help keep your hair smooth and static free, but will also prevent your skin from becoming dry throughout the winter season.

  1. Don’t over wash:

This is the best tip for healthy hair, regardless of which season it is. Shampooing your locks daily takes away moisture and natural oil of your hairs as well, thus leaving behind dry, brittle strands. Shampoo your hair twice or thrice at most. In between you can always seek help from conditioner, but avoid applying conditioner in the roots.

  1. Stay-in conditioner:

A rich stay-in conditioner is the safest bet for winter-damaged locks. Apply some good leave-in conditioner to your hair every time you shampoo them. It will keep you from frizzy, fly away strands caused by static. A leave-in conditioner also helps avoid a hat head.

  1. Dry hairs before you go out:

This is a must! By going out with wet hair you will not only catch cold but your hair will also lose their natural oils and moisture content – courtesy cold air outside. This will ultimately lead to brittle hairs with split ends. Spend a few minutes extra after a shower to make sure your hair are completely dry before heading out.

  1. Limit use of hairdryers:

Hair dryers are not good for your hair! How many times you want to read this statement? Blow drying deprives your shafts or their natural moisture as well, thus causing them to become dry and brittle. The best practice is to totally avoid hair dryers. But if necessary, let the towel do most of the drying and use a dryer for very small time. Also make sure you set the dryer on its lowest possible setting to minimize heat damage.

  1. Dry oils may help:

Dry oils are easily available in the market as over the counter mists. These specially designed hair care products help spread the natural hair oil without weighing down your tresses. Some good quality dry oils also help fight split ends and make your locks healthy and strong.

  1. Anti-frizz serum is not a bad choice even:

If you have fine hair prone to frizz and static even during summers, winters can be no less than a nightmare for your hair. But don’t worry! Anti-frizz serums are there to help you. Applying just a few drops of anti-frizz serum to your hair after shower will help avoid flyaway strands and keep your tresses soft and smooth.

  1. Trim, Trim and Trim:

Yes trimming is the best solution for dried and damaged hairs. By cutting away the split ends you can make your fine hair look fresh and healthy. Invest in some good haircut at the start of winter and flaunt your locks throughout the season. However, regular touch ups will be necessary to keep your cutting fresh all through the season. Get half an inch hairs trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks to keep your locks at their best.

  1. Hydrating masks:

Applying a hydrating mask to your hair once a week will help replenish the moisture. There are dozens of over the counter hydrating masks available in the market. Work some good quality mask into your locks and wait for 5 to 7 minutes. Rinse it thoroughly and you will notice the effect right away. You can also make natural hydrating mask at home. Homemade masks are not only economical but also free of any harsh chemicals. Thus do not cause any further damage to your delicate tresses.

Follow the aforementioned tips and keep your hair silky smooth throughout the winter season.
