Ideal Hair Replacement Options

Hair replacement

In this day of technology, there are numerous hair replacement options available to help people retain and restore a fuller head of hair. These include both surgical and non-surgical options. One of the simplest ways to cover your bald thatch is wearing a hairpiece. There is a wide variety of hairpieces and toupees available, and some of them really look natural on the head. But the problem with hairpieces and wigs is that they are not permanent and do not grow new hair. Besides that, there is always a possibility of detaching, which can be quite embarrassing for the wearer.

Now you must be wondering what are ideal hair replacement options. These include medicines, PRP therapy and hair transplant surgery. Here we will discuss all the three options in detail:

MEDICATIONS FOR HAIR LOSS

There are several topical as well as oral medicines that have been approved by the US FOOD and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating hair loss. Minoxidil is a topical application whereas Finasteride is an oral medication prescribed for treating male pattern baldness in men.

Minoxidil is an over the counter hair growth stimulant recommended to men older than 18 years of age with mild to moderate hair loss. Studies have proven effectiveness of Minoxidil in over 30% of the patients.

Finasteride, on the other hand, is rarely recommended to patients under age of 25. Also, it is not a medicine for females. This prescription oral medicine is for advanced stages of hair loss. It has an efficacy rate of up to 50%, given the patient uses it regularly following doctor’s instructions.

A significant reduction in hair loss and increased scalp coverage can be seen after 3-6 months use. Nevertheless, results become clearly evident after 8 to 12 months. Minoxidil and finasteride are most effective when used to treat hair loss in its initial stages.

But like hairpieces, even medicines don’t give permanent hair. To retain the results, you must continue the treatment indefinitely. Stopping treatment leads to recurrence of hair loss and your scalp will return to pretreatment status within six months (in case of Minoxidil) or 12 months (in case of finasteride).

For females hair loss FDA has approved only 2% Minoxidil solution. Higher concentrations of Minoxidil and Finasteride are not for females, as they can cause some serious side effects in women. Nevertheless, consult a physician before starting any medication, no matter how mild it is.

PRP THERAPY FOR HAIR LOSS:

If you are seeking an effective and lasting cure for hair loss, look no further than PRP hair replacement therapy. It is a non-surgical, minimally invasive technique which involves injecting Platelet Rich Plasma, obtained from the patient’s own blood, into the entire scalp to stimulate hair growth. PRP is rich in growth factors, which help to stimulate adult stem cells in tissues of miniaturized hair follicles. This ultimately strengthens the follicles, assisting in robust hair growth.

PRP is obtained by centrifuging the blood sample obtained from the patient’s body in a specially designed apparatus. Topical anesthetic is applied to the scalp to numb it before administering the PRP serum to the entire scalp through a series of injections. Special attention is paid to the areas with hair thinning or bald patches. Results can be seen within 6 to 8 months and generally last for up to two years. A reinjection will be needed after that to maintain results.

HAIR TRANSPLANT SURGERY:

If you are looking for a permanent fix, a hair transplant surgery may be worth considering. It transplants DHT resistant hair follicles in the areas of problem, using either FUT or FUE technique. Since the hair follicles used for transplantation are baldness resistant, they don’t fall off under the effect of Dihydrotestosterone.
