Hair loss due to Scalp disorders

It’s disgusting when you see white flakes on your favorite dress. That can be messing up your appearance and beauty. Scalp disorders lead to hair loss and sometimes skin rashes can also cause hair loss. Most of the scalp conditions are hereditary. Malnutrition and infections can also lead to hair loss.

Hair loss due to Scalp disorders:

  1. Psoriasis
  2. Folliculitis
  3. Seborrheic Dermatitis
  4. Cysts
  5. Ringworm

·         Psoriasis:

It’s an autoimmune condition in which cells in the top most layer of the skin are affected and a psoriasis rash is made up with pink scaly plaques with a silvery scale. And it causes itching, pain, bleeding, and crusting.

Psoriasis can be treated if it affects any part of the body. But if scalp is affected by it then it’s very difficult to cure it. And anyone can get it at any age.

·         Folliculitis:

It’s an inflammation of the hair follicles. Folliculitis can be caused by a bacteria or due to irritation and itching from shaving, heavy conditioners, long-lasting hair dyes and also due to excessive sweating.

Little bumps scattered throughout the scalp with slight acne and sore are the symptoms of Folliculitis.

·         Seborrheic Dermatitis:

Cradle cap in babies and itchy patches on greasy scalp or dandruff in adults are the early signs of the Seborrheic Dermatitis. Mostly these symptoms are caused either by stress or by seasonal changes.

·         Cysts:

Cysts can occur on the skin but the good news is, these can be easily identified. These are usually like marble or grape sized and fluid filled sacs. These are mostly genetic condition and sometimes these get irritated, infected and also cause pain.

·         Ringworm:

Kids and even adults can get infected by ringworms. After several types of research, it has been found that there are few ways by which people get infected by this fungus.

  • Human to human
  • animal to human (cats are a common source)
  • Object to human (clothing, towels, bedding/ linens, combs, and brushes).

The rash eventually is painful and scaly. Sometimes it causes enlarged lymph nodes and these mostly form bald spots, damaged hair and black dots.

Other Factors that lead to Hair Loss:

  1. Male pattern baldness
  2. Alopecia areata
  3. Nutritional deficiencies
  4. Hyperthyroidism, over active thyroid gland
  5. Hypothyroidism, under active thyroid gland
  6. Hypopituitarism, underactive pituitary gland
  7. Lichen planus, skin disease
  8. Celiac disease, an allergy
  9. Systemic lupus erythematosus, an autoimmune disorder
  10. after giving birth
  11. Certain medications including birth control pills, blood thinners, for arthritis, depression, gout, heart conditions, and high blood pressure.
  12. Long lasting Chemicals
  13. Heating tools to style hair
  14. Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia

Symptoms of Scalp Conditions:

  1. rashes
  2. hair loss or hair thinning
  3. weak hair and breakages
  4. itchiness
  5. scaly patches
  6. pain
  7. tenderness

Seek the Trichologist Help:

If you are experiencing hair loss then it’s a very good to seek the trichologist help in time, before it’s too late. And your hair loss becomes a permanent disorder which is untreated.

Diagnosis of your Hair loss due to Scalp Disorders:

There are some scalp disorders which are easy to identify after a visual examination, such as:

But if your hair loss isn’t due to above-mentioned scalp disorders and it’s due to some other conditions. Then the trichologist may need to take some tests.

He may take a sample of your blood for further examination to identify and detect the actual factor behind your hair loss.

Treatments for Scalp Disorders:

·         Treatment for Psoriasis:

If you are a victim of psoriasis, then the trichologist may recommend you to start taking steroids. And for tougher situations, he may recommend you to use injections, which are called biologics. These injections will help to suppress what’s causing the flare ups.

·         Treatment for Folliculitis:

If the trichologist figures out that you are suffering from Folliculitis, then he may recommend you to use a topical or oral antibiotic medication. If there isn’t an infectious agent present then he may recommend you anti-inflammatory medications such as steroid creams.

·         Treatment for Seborrheic Dermatitis:

If Seborrheic Dermatitis is the factor of your scalp disorder and causing your hair loss, then the trichologist may prescribe you an anti-yeast shampoo such as ketoconazole

·         Treatment for Cysts:

If your hair loss is due to cysts, then the trichologist will either recommend you to leave it alone or to get a surgery for the removal of your cysts.

·         Treatment for Ringworm:

If the trichologist identifies ringworm as your hair loss factor, then he may prescribe you antifungal pills or topical medications.
