Different Types of Hair Loss in Women

Hair loss can be very upsetting. And the statistics do not help at all considering a third of women lose their hair at some point in their life. What makes it more worrying is not knowing what is causing the hair fall, balding at some spots or thinning. Also considering that hair plays more of an aesthetic value in women more than men, it is important to learn the different types of hair loss and how they can be treated or prevented.

We at Hair Transplant Dubai have put together a few types of alopecia – partial or complete hair loss – amongst women and how you can avert them if possible.

Pattern baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia):

If you suffer from pattern baldness, your hair will start thinning at the crown and top as well as the center. Other areas will not be affected and will remain as they are. Although this type of baldness is not very well understood, it is thought to be caused by either a change of hormones, aging or genetics. The worst part about pattern baldness is that it is permanent and cannot be reversed. But since the follicles still remain alive after the hair thins out, new hair can still be grown on that patch and that can easily be done at Hair Transplant in Dubai.

Patchy Hair loss (Alopecia Areata):

If you find that you have smooth and totally bald patches on your head, eyebrows or any other part of your body, then you suffer from this type of hair loss. It develops very quickly and can sometimes attack your entire head-full of hair leaving it bald. This condition can be characterized by some mild irritation, itching, burning and redness on these patches. This form of baldness also known as Alopecia Areata, is thought to be caused by an auto immune disease. The good news about patchy hair loss is that when the hair falls off, the follicles remain alive and able to grow new hair. This will happen in a few months of after the auto immune disease has been treated. On the other hand, there are other treatment options including steroids, minoxidil solutions, wigs, topical immunotherapy etc.

Traction Alopecia:

This type of hair loss is caused by damage to the hair follicles due to continuous pulling over a lengthy period of time. This can be caused by several styling methods including braiding, corn rows, weaving, chemicals, bleaching, thermal straighteners etc. It mostly affects the temporal regions of the scalp but can also cause hair loss in other areas depending on the styling. Although traction alopecia can sometimes cause permanent hair loss; it can also be treated if caught early. As for the permanent loss of hair through traction alopecia, Hair Transplant can also correct the problem.

Tinea capitis (Ringworm of the scalp):

This hair loss type is caused by a fungal infection and tends to attack school-going children. It causes bald spots on the scalp with red, fluid-filled sores. This condition is contagious and can be passed from one person to another through sharing of combs and other personal effects. The best part about this is that it goes away once the infection is cured and the hair grows back.

Involutional Alopecia:

This is the ongoing loss of hair as you age. A certain number of hair follicles decide to rest, and keeping on resting more and more as the years go by. This is thought to be caused by diet, genetics or some sort of disease. This hair loss problem can be corrected either through hair transplant in Dubai or some medications that can stop the thinning process.
