Best Treatment of Androgenic Hair Loss

Androgenic Hair Loss

Androgenic alopecia is a genetic disorder that causes the sufferer to gradually lose hair due to increased levels of male sex hormone, testosterone. Higher levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) miniaturize hair follicles, thus hindering their ability to regrow new hair. This genetic disorder affects both men and women. In men, this condition is also known as male pattern baldness whereas in women it is termed as female pattern baldness.

The World Health Organization has rated it as the most common cause of hair loss among men and women, affecting over 70% men and 40% women at some stage in their lives. While in men it is characterized by receding hairline and a thinning head crown, while women exhibit diffused hair thinning all over the scalp, specifically over the top of the head. The worst thing about androgenic alopecia is that most of the times the damage caused to the hair follicles, in this case, is irreversible. DHT permanently damages follicle’s ability to regrow hair and thus leads to baldness over time.

If you are also a victim of androgenic alopecia and want to regain a full head of hair, a hair transplant surgery may be the right option for you. It is the only guaranteed and permanent solution for a thinning or completely bald scalp.

What is a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon removes healthy, balding resistant hair follicles from the donor area – which is mostly the back or the head or the sides of the scalp. These follicles are then transplanted into the areas showing signs of hair thinning or those which have gone completely bald.

How are hair follicles extracted?

Generally, two techniques are used for the extraction of hair follicles, the Follicular Unit Transplant method (FUT) and the Follicular Unit Extraction method (FUE).

Follicular Unit Transplant: FUT, also known as strip harvesting, is the traditional graft extraction technique which involves removing a linear hair-bearing strip of skin from the donor area. This strip is then dissected under a powerful microscope to separate grafts of the required size.

Follicular Unit Extraction: The FUE method is a relatively newer and more advanced technique. In this method, the hair follicles are extracted individually from the donor area using a specially designed punch tool of diameter less than 0.1 mm. The doctor extracts the follicles one by one and stored them in an artificial medium – generally saline solution – to keep them alive even outside the human body. Once enough grafts have been extracted, the surgeon then implants them in the recipient area.

How are the grafts implanted?

Graft implantation is the most important and the most crucial stage as it will define the outcome of your surgery. The more aesthetically prepared the sites are, the more natural results you will get. Your surgeon will prick tiny holes at different angles in the recipient area to promote a natural hair pattern. After preparing them he will carefully insert the already prepared grafts in the holes in a predetermined density and pattern.

FUT vs. FUE Hair Transplant:

Both FUT and FUE have their own merits and demerits but the latter is a relatively more preferred choice of masses, as it is not only minimally invasive but is also a scarless technique. Unlike Follicular Unit Transplant, FUE does not leave behind a visible linear scar in the donor area – a telltale sign of a hair transplant surgery. Besides that, FUE can be performed on the patients with tight scalps and/or limited donor hair supply.

Recovery process:

The recovery process of hair transplant surgery is a little extended and needs your patience and cooperation. While you may be able to resume non-strenuous activities after 5 to 7 weeks, it may take several months before you will be able to return back to a normal daily routine. Also, it will take 8 to 12 months before you will be able to see the final results of the procedure. Follow your doctor’s post-op instructions carefully to make sure that you recover from the surgery quickly and uneventfully.
