Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) Causes and How to Treat It?

hair transplant dubai

Alopecia is a medical name for hair loss, and Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia refers to a type of heredity hair thinning that is diffused over the entire scalp and does not follow a set pattern. Unlike the diffuse patterned alopecia, DUPA lacks the stable permanent zone which could be associated with hair loss and thinning. Instead the thinning and small bald patches are dispersed over the entire scalp, including the sides and back of the head – the areas which wear healthy, balding resistant hair in case of typical Androgenic Alopecia, aka Male Pattern Baldness. If you are also a victim of generalized hair thinning, here we will share with you “Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) Causes and How to Treat It”.

What causes Diffused Unpatterned Alopecia?

Knowing the root cause of a problem is essential in a bid to address it effectively. Eradicate the underlying cause and live a problem-free life. Same rule applies to DUPA. You can only treat the condition effectively and prominently if you know the culprit. Here are some common causes of Diffused Unpatterned Alopecia:

  • Heredity: As stated above, it is a genetic condition that runs in family. Like a typical male pattern baldness case, DUPA also has a family history. If your father or maternal/paternal uncles have scattered hair thinning, you are at a higher risk than anybody else.
  • Stress and anxiety: Stress, anxiety and depression are some very common psychological issues nowadays. Every other person you meet will share with you some stress related symptoms. But these psychological problems, if not addressed timely and properly, can trigger other medical and cosmetic problems, unpatterned hair loss being one of them.
  • Unhealthy diet: Malnutrition is also among some common triggers of unpatterned alopecia. When your follicles don’t get the required amount of essential nutrients, they become weak and if the issue is not addressed in time, this can progress into hair shedding. This type of hair loss also lacks a specific shape or pattern.
  • Constant traction: Wearing tight hairstyles that cause constant traction on hair in certain parts of the scalp can also cause scattered hairless patches here and there. This type of hair loss is called traction alopecia and it also lacks a proper pattern.

Treatment of Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia:

Since the hair loss pattern is not predictable, hair transplant surgery is not considered an ideal treatment for DUPA. Non surgical treatment options for DUPA include:

  • Medicines: Minoxidil and Finasteride are two FDA approved medicines for treating all types of alopecia, including DUPA. The former is a topical application, available over the counter, whereas the latter is a prescription oral pill. The biggest disadvantage of these medicines is that their results are temporary. You just stop taking the medicine today and the hair loss will return within a few weeks. Also the grown hair will fall off.
  • Mesotherapy: Mesotherapy is an injection therapy in which a chemical cocktail containing a healthy mix of pharmaceutical drugs, enzymes, minerals, vitamins and herbs, is injected into the scalp, paying special attention to the affected areas. The treatment works by enhancing scalp circulation. This strengthens the follicles and triggers robust hair growth.
  • ACell/PRP Hair Loss Therapy: ACell/PRP treatment is also an injection therapy in which a mixture of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and ACell’s Extracellular Matrix is administered into the scalp. ACell helps strengthen miniaturized follicles whereas PRP is rich in growth factors which stimulate adult stem cells. Together, ACell and PRP therapy help fight hair loss and trigger healthy hair growth.
