THE NATURAL EFFECT
YOU HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR
Taking proper care after hair transplant surgery is an important factor in gaining your desired results. No matter how good procedure you had, carelessness on your part after the surgery can destroy your newly transplanted, delicate hair. Read the following lines to know the safety precautions after a hair transplant surgery.
Taking Care of the Recipient Area:
Crusts of blood will form after the surgery on the recipient area. You need to take extra care for the first 10 days following the surgery. During this period, your newly transplanted hair will attach themselves to the recipient area permanently. The transplanted areas as well as the donor area will be bandaged after the surgery. This bandage will be removed the next morning. Avoid wetting your scalp for at least 24 to 36 hours. After that you may take shower with lukewarm water, but be careful and don’t let the water exert any pressure on your scalp. Block the water with hand; alternatively, use a bucket to pour water gently on your scalp.
Place a small amount of the shampoo, prescribed by your doctor, on the sponge and apply it to the recipient area with rolling or patting motion. Do not rub! Some scab will come off automatically, but do not try to remove any crusting forcefully. Wash your head this way once on the second day after surgery, and twice the next day. Avoid soaking your water for longer periods. If you soak your head in water for long period, you will see that the grafts will swell. This is not harmful, but it makes your grafts delicate for some time.
For the first 10 days, be very gentle with your transplanted grafts. Do not rub, scratch, or pick the grafts. You may feel your scalp itchy during this time but this is because of the crusting. Scratching your scalp with nails is strongly prohibited. Use cold compressions to relieve this situation. After a couple of weeks, you will notice shedding of hair in the transplanted area. Do not worry; this is normal and is medically known as shock loss. Also avoid using tar shampoos for the first 10 days after the surgery because ingredients in these shampoos may interfere with the growth of the transplanted grafts.
Taking Care of Donor Area:
In case of FUT the donor area will have one long linear scar, while FUE will result in several pinhole scars at the donor site. In each case crusting will form over the scars. The same no wash rule applies for the donor area as well. Keep it completely dry for at least 24 to 36 hours and after that wash it in the same manner as you washed the recipient area. Let the scabs come off while shampooing, as this will accelerate the healing process. However, do not try to remove the scab forcefully. Your surgeon may recommend you some antibiotic ointment. Apply a thin layer of it on the donor area. Cover the donor area with Tefla pads (bought from medical store or provided by your surgeon) before going to bed. This will stop the ointment from getting on the pillow. Avoid indulging into any strenuous exercises for 2 to 3 weeks, or until your surgeon allows you. Also avoid using hair styling tools and hair dryers for the first 10 to 14 days.
These are general safety guidelines that you need to follow after surgical hair restoration. However, your surgeon will provide you specific guidelines to take care of your head after a hair transplant, based on the surgical technique used for transplantation. Following these guidelines carefully will ensure that you get the most out of your effort and money, you have put into your hair transplant.
