For many, a hair transplant surgery is a life-changing procedure that not only changes their physical appearance but their self-esteem as well. It is a huge investment that you make to reap the benefits for the rest of your life. But a simple negligence can ruin the outcome of your hair transplant. You are allowed to shampoo your scalp by the third of the surgery and after that you are asked to wash your head regularly to allow the scab come off naturally. But the shampoo you choose to wash your head after hair transplant plays a key role in determining the ultimate outcome of the surgery.
Carefully read the ingredients listed on the shampoo bottle and make sure you don’t select the one containing chemicals injurious for your freshly transplanted hair. Listed below are some ingredients that you need to avoid post-transplant.
Most of the low quality shampoos contain sulfates such as Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and Ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS). These organic compounds are added to the shampoos because they help produce more foam. But if present in concentrations of over two percent, these sulfates can irritate the scalp and damage even healthy hair follicles. So you can very well imagine effect of ALS and SLS on your scalp post-transplant.
Sodium chloride, the common salt that you use to season your dishes, is also used in manufacturing of shampoos and conditioners as a thickener. But it can also cause itchy and dry scalp, and in worst case scenario, may trigger hair loss as well. Freshly transplanted hair follicles may not be able to withstand harshness of sodium chloride and may fall off.
Formaldehyde is a preservative that is often used in shampoos to increase their shelf life. It is also known for its disinfectant qualities and this is why it is usually used in baby shampoos. This apparently beneficial chemical can actually damage the DNA of hair tissues. It can also cause hair loss and thus, shampoos containing formaldehyde should be avoided for at least 4 weeks following a hair transplant surgery.
Almost all hair care products contain some percentage of alcohol and therefore it seems to be nearly impossible to avoid alcohol completely. But you can avoid at least its higher concentrations. Look your shampoo for alcohol content and buy one containing least proportion of alcohol. Higher concentrations of alcohol dehydrate and damage hair, leading to hair loss, especially when used after a hair transplant.
Greasers are also a key ingredient of most of the hair care products. Petroleum, mineral oil and lanolin are all greasers added to hair care products for artificial wetness and shine. But these greasers prevent absorption of natural oils by the scalp as well as hair shafts, ultimately damaging your hair texture.

"I was really pleased with my experience at Dubai Cosmetic Surgery. I had to cancel the first date I booked, because of my daughter, but when I called them the next day, they fit us in that afternoon, which was really good. My mum and I went to a free consultation for Laser Assisted Liposuction, and it went very well. We were really impressed with the doctor, Dr. Juan Tadeo Krogulec - he was lovely. He spent as long as we needed with us, and didn't rush us. He was really thorough and not only did he answer all of our questions, he answered others we hadn't even thought of asking! I think that when the time comes for treatment we'll probably be going with them.".
I am very satisfied with my results. I strongly recommend this clinic for every one who wants great result and its very cheap to :). Dr. Cagtay and his team are very professional and do take care of their patients.".
